Female Muay Thai

I agree that the golden era of Muay Thai featured some of the best fighters in the world. Muay Thai is not as popular in Thailand among locals, but it is growing in popularity abroad.

Ive doing doing muay thai on and off for 6 years as a means to keep fit. Also because I never really took the training to seriously and compliment ted it with the correct eating habits and lifestyle.

Although my kicking technique still needs lots of work, this article breaks down a lot of my barriers and answers a lot of my questions around technique.

The slow motion examples are a massive benefit and help as well with great explanation. I have a goal to go over and train in thailand in a years time and to work hard to get in good condition before I do so, this article has helped me loads, thank you.

So is he Dutch kickboxer or Muay Thai? The unfortunate thing nowadays is a lot of the amateur kickboxing organisations have pointfighting and light continuos.

This has got to be the worse constructed article ever written. No mention of the warrior spirit? And one strong dutch boxing kick does not make an entire sport better than another.

Downwards chopping kicks are not exclusive to dutch. Kickboxing, despite the differences with Muay Thai, shares a lot of the similarities minus the elbows, knees, clinch and all that.

If you train one of these styles, you can adapt it to fit the other with some work much much more so Muay Thai moving to Kickboxing than the reverse though.

Muay Thai includes everything Kickboxing does and more. The timing, the style of kicks, and the rules are different, but if you train Muay Thai, you can adapt to pure kickboxing.

Boxing is the better choice if you want to improve Muay Thai. Boxing is a completely different game than Muay Thai with the timing, the hand speed, the combos, and the ability to put those combos into place effectively.

A lot of this can translate over to Muay Thai when you punch, if you adapt it correctly and throw away some of the defensive stuff.

As such, Boxing has the most to offer Muay Thai by training it specifically. Work on pure boxing and you become a much deadlier Muay Thai fighter if you can adapt your hands for the Muay Thai game.

Brilliant article — learned so much from it, especially with the great video examples. Understand so much better the differences in how kicks are thrown and movement styles, techniques, etc.

The Best K1 fight ever really was the best K1 fight ever — breathtaking stuff! Wow, really incredible article. Thanks for putting this together, must have been a huge effort with all of the clips and everything.

Yes Muay thai from Thailand is much different. They keep hands in front and trying to catch you if they catch you with one limb and pulling than they hitting with another.

It makes hit more powerful and more precise it is very useful on the street. American old kickboxing was a simply boxing with few kicks.

They can get hit with a smile on the face. In the west not popular training. Slowly process takes like 2 years to built tissue etc.

Muay thai, kickboxing, boxing, taekwondo, karate, ect… What I want to know though… Is there a style out there which teaches core muay thai kicks, knees, elbows, and clinch, but with a focus on western style boxing and a couple extra kicks for diversity?

I just wanted point out that american full contact karate and kyokushin full contact karate are not the same thing have different rulesets and probably developed independently.

American full contact karate is as you have listed above. The general rules were 1. No face punches while low kicks were fine.

Kickboxers train their hands, feet, elbow, knees and sometimes heads as weapons for striking. Not only do they learn how to use those weapons, but they also learn how to defend against them.

As Joe Lansdale put it describing an altercation with a boxer, "He was pretty good, but I had four wheel drive. Where kickboxing teaches a range of tools, boxing specializes in one thing and one thing only: A skilled boxer punches so well that boxing was the only western martial art to impress Bruce Lee enough to include its concepts in his martial art Jeet Kun Do.

Boxers also tend to be faster than kickboxers, again owing to the necessity of defending against the lightning fast jabs or their training partners.

There is no such thing as a superior martial style, according to martial arts instructor Dave Coffman. There are superior athletes, superior coaches and superior methods of training.

A dedicated, talented kickboxer with a skilled coach will beat a mediocre or unmotivated boxer, and vice versa. Between two equally talented athletes, one a boxer and one a kickboxer?

But this clinching technique has no influence in Kickboxing, as there is a great chance of being thrown away by the opponent.

Boxing has its origin in Greece and modern boxing can be traced to the United Kingdom. Kickboxing has its origin in Japan.

Japanese boxing promoter Osamu Noguchi created kickboxing in the s. Both hands and feet can be used in kickboxing but in boxing only hands are used.

No strikes are allowed below the belt in boxing. Clinching, circling and left jab are considered valuable methods in boxing.

But these have only very less relevance in kickboxing. Boxing has its origin in Greece and modern boxing originated in United Kingdom.

In many cases, it's an "apples and oranges" argument, such as comparing a ground fighting arts, such as wrestling against a stand up art like karate.

Kickboxing and boxing are very similar, however, and a comparison between them makes more sense than many others. Boxing and kickboxing share many advantages when it comes to a street altercation.

Both provide fighters with tools and strategies to use if attacked. Both include rigorous physical training to make attacks hit harder and to help the athlete absorb damage.

Perhaps most important, as defensive tactics instructor Lee Sprague points out, boxers and kickboxers spend time getting hit. That means the blows they receive in a fight won't make them panic.

The shared disadvantages of kickboxing and boxing stem from the fact that both are practiced as sports. Sports follow rules, and rules don't exist in street defense situations.

For example, kicks to the groin, although very common in a street fight, aren't allowed in boxing or kickboxing.

Thus neither teaches how to deliver or defend against one. But a kick boxer can hit anywhere. Circling is an important manoeuvre in boxing to change guard.

But it is considered less important in kickboxing as you can strike an opponent without changing guard or moving away.

While the left jab has much defensive value in boxing, it has less value with kickboxing. Another difference that can be noticed is that the head is the main target in boxing which is not so in kickboxing.

Clinching is another important defensive method in boxing used to stop an opponent from attacking.

There are very few MMA guys with even mediocre-level boxing, let alone high level boxing. If I had to choose a couple standouts for decent boxing, I would say Fankie Edgar has good boxing, modified to suite an MMA style, and Anderson Silva who with his slick head movements and fluid punches from all angles MOVED and fought a bit like a proper boxer.

Mind you, apparently Silva has fought some pro boxing matches, so I can see it in his movements. I will say from my own experience training and fighting MMA matches, I myself never put a lot of focus into pure boxing or my hands as there was a lot of other stuff to take up your time, like jujitsu and muay thai for mma.

I believe there are some reasons. A boxer is a master specialist at one thing only hands! MMA guys, if they train as fighters, put in days a week, multiple times a day often.

But likely they only spend one or two of those days working on boxing only. A boxer will put in days a week, times a day ONLY training boxing.

Right away you see how much more time boxers spend learning to master their hands over MMA guys. This same argument applies to Muay Thai guys.

Often Muay Thai guys have weak boxing. There is a reason why though. But this is made up for the fact you know if you try laying it on with your hands, you will get taken down or clinched in a MMA match.

The size of the gloves and the sheer number of variables change things considerably. If you try to strike like a traditional MT or boxer, you will get eaten up in mma.

Thank you, great article! Do not loose sight of all the permissible wrestling like hand fighting mandated in a muay thai bout.

Ultimatly thai hitting uses a lunge step and continues the motion after hitting to make other strikes. I call this continuation — chain moves.

Combinations are to much like western boxing. Foot work — let any boxer get hammered onto there legs and have them dance around the ring.

I think a muay thai fighter with the snappy punches of a boxer and head movement slipping not so much ducking and weaving would really light up most of their opponents.

Glad you found the article useful. Boxing and Muay Thai really are different sports. Someone who trains in pure boxing will absolutely smash a Muay Thai fighter in a hands only battle I see this all the time here in Thailand under the rules of boxing no clinching, elbows, knees, or kicks.

However, take that same boxer and allow Muay Thai rules, and unless the boxer modifies the style, he will get smashed with leg kicks, knees and all manner of strikes.

But, take a Muay Thai fighter and give him awesome boxing modified of course for Muay Thai and wow, you have a very dangerous fighter.

Could you help me choose between the 3? This really depends on your situation — how much time you have, how much money you have to put into training, and what you really want to learn.

Boxing is completely different than Mauy Thai. Then there is the timing, the footwork, the defensive head movement. If you can, cross train between boxing and Muay Thai.

If you are in France, there are some top class pure Muay Thai gyms. I live in Paris. My question to you is: Someone who is good at MT who does something like only boxing sparring will usually getten eaten alive by someone who is only decent at pure boxing I see this ALL the time, living in Thailand and sparring with all types of Muay Thai guys.

Train primarily boxing, but if you can just put in times a week doing MT, you can really learn that style while also mastering boxing and you will be able to mesh them together without having to learn one, then unlearn the other when focusing on the other.

The big difference is the stance indeed! I never really got around the boxing stance, since the Muay Thai stance has become my natural movement.

But I also learned a good boxer is a force to be reckoned with! Those punches are sharp! Tip on how to handle a boxer: The big question for me is….

Between a boxer and a Thai fighter, with K1 or Thai rules, who would win? Essentially a striking match with all weapons allowed.

Assuming both fighters are excellent. My assumption is the Thai boxer would win, due to more weapons at his disposal. In fact with kicks and knees alone the boxer would be killed on the spot.

When all weapons are available, the fighter who has more options will always have the advantage. The Muay Thai fighter would win against all other styles if he the fighter has enough experience and skill to take advantage of those weapons.

There is absolutely no question about this. Even K1 rules with no clinch and elbows, the kicks and short knees from brief clinching and kicks will change the game completely.

Put a K1 fighter or thai boxer in a boxing match with a real boxer, and the boxer will almost always win. Loved the video selection as well.

That James Toney highlight reel is the real deal. The Muay Thai Stance is very very different than the classic boxing style stance.

Kickboxing has a sort of hybrid stance between the two, depending on the flavor Dutch Kickboxing say and how hand heavy the practitioner is.

I will say watch how some of the old school Muay Thai Practitioners move Somrak, Samart in some of their fights on youtube.

Both boxing and Muay Thai though, you move in the direction with the closest foot in the direction you want to move footwork.

You may want to look into this. Thanks a lot for sharing your experience and all that detailed research with us in a very well-written style. As a martial arts enthusiast, I enjoyed every line…!
